On March 15th, SACNAS members travelled to Dallas to help the American Chemical Society do a special set of demos for kids at the Perot Museum. Families visited each demo station and expanded their knowledge of chemistry. It was a fun time for all and a great event for the kids. A special thanks to the dedicated members for driving to Dallas for this event. Our travel to this event was sponsored by an Equity and Access fund from Texas State University.

SACNAS members participated at the San Marcos STEM Fair held at the San Marcos activity center. We had four tables where children of all ages and their families were able to see demonstrations including dancing oobleck, the preparation of fluorescent bouncy balls, home-made lava lamps, dry ice boiling, dry ice bubbles, preparation of ice cream and frozen marshmallows using liquid nitrogen, fluorescence, turning of pennies into silver and gold, and shrinking balloons on liquid nitrogen.  If you’d like to download instructions to conduct some of the experiments at home, please click here.

We got to meet a lot of local families, and were invited to a number of schools for future science demos. It was a complete success!!!

Thank you to the NSF PREM program at Texas State for sponsoring our demonstration!
